Coachella 2013...Weekend 2-Stone Roses BUMPED!
4.18.13

Picture
Our recovery is complete...kinda.  Are you ready for Weekend 2?  Well, I hope you feel the same as us that it is complete rubbish that The Stone Roses have been BUMPED to under Blur.  Don't get us wrong Blur were epic they knocked it out the desert that Friday night, but The Stone Roses have earned their place....no-one should be messing with British Indie Royalty

Coachella 2013 Weekend 1-Recovered Yet???
4.16.13

Picture
Oh how do we list the highlights of this weekend? Well, it definitely wasn't R.Kelly that's for sure...what exactly was that about?   Anyway here are some of our personal pics from the weekend, and some of our top moments...

-The seemingly over emotional Damon Alburn-this guy not only gave the crowd every hit from the naughty nineties but seemed a little, errm, teary eyed?  Was it just us or did Damon seem genuinely grateful to be back on that stage? Very nice to see...

-The Stone Roses being empty-Ok, trust us we are NOT happy that for some reason people went to other bands that one of the best bands in the world, however, it did mean the true die hard fans could get up close and personal.

 -James Blake-Nuff said....

-Palma Violets-We were passing a tent and suddenly saw a few sweaty English lads on stage producing sweet, sweet sounds. Sadly we didn't catch their whole set, but we caught enough to completely fall in love...AMAZING.

Everyone Wants PEACE In Their Life
3.26.13

Picture
After these Birmingham lads blew SXSW away this month, everyone wants a piece of Peace (oi, you knew that was coming...)

Peace's debut album 'In Love' is roaring its way around the UK since they were part of the NME Tour and now the US is waking up to genius.

Once again the UK refuses to let us forget they produce indie rock at its best. Have a listen to a snippet from their album below....

The whispers about City Of The Sun have been buzzing around for a while and we are pretty excited to say they are playing in Silverlake tonight.  Described as a mix of flamenco folk and Indie rock may sound odd, but once you catch these guys their sound will make you believe that combination of genres completely makes sense.  Take a gander at these NYC lads....CityOfTheSun

Gotta Love Coachella

Picture

We Heart Young Summer!
3.5.13

Open your ears and take note of Young Summer and their debut single "Fever Dream".  Bobbie Allen's vocals are easily compared to that of Florence Welch with a gentle power delivering pop-synth perfection. Take a listen....

A Year On From The Loss Of Amy Winehouse
7.23.12

Picture
Today marks a year since 27 year old Amy Winehouse was found in her bed in her London home, dead from a seizure.

Today you should remember Amy by listening to her music-whose lyrics could break your heart in a verse-and get to know her all over again.

Amy's father, Mitch Winehouse, once asked Amy how she wrote a song, and he said her reply was so foreign to him, he couldn't understand it; it was like she spoke another language. That was why she was one of the greatest voices of our time. There was no way for Amy to explain how she wrote and sang the way she did; there was never any planning or calculation, it was just within her. Amy wrote about sadness, mockery and love, and the world listened.

Amy's dear friend and musical legend, Mark Ronson is quoted in saying, "All those lyrics, it's real emotion. Pain. And she had to live that. All I had to do was make it sound good."  Amy's music made sense to people because she loved so entirely and hurt so deeply; and then poured it out for all to hear. Amy was a deeply complex old soul who sang with a sob and so unfairly never got the chance to share more with us all.

Before her short life ended so abruptly on July 23rd 2011, many close to her reported her excitement and happiness had come back, but in the end her body had been so damaged, it gave out. For a girl whose passion and drama played out in song it was a tragically unjust way to leave.

Watch the video below, and remember the true, painful, beauty of Amy Winehouse and wonder what may have been.

Kate Nash Is No Longer Kate Nash...??
6.21.12

Picture
{Image Via gigwise.com}
If any of you have heard Kate Nash's new song 'Under-Estimate The Girl' you may be wondering if this is the same Kate Nash who sang about cups of tea and dickhead boyfriends.

The singer has been widely criticized for the change in musical direction she has taken of late.  When asked Nash has responded to critics saying, she will never return to making music in the same style featured on her first two albums, "it is important to push boundaries, to try new things, and not to re-create."

 Check out her reinvention below.....

Will Frances Bean Cobain Face Her Mother In Court?
6.19.12

Picture
{Image Via blogs.sf.weekly.com}
Another day, another story about the non-existent relationship between Courtney Love and her estranged daughter, Frances Bean Cobain...

The Hollywood Reporter is stating that lawyers suing Courtney Love for defamtion have issued a writ requesting 19-year old Frances Bean to make a statement explaining what she meant when she said, "Twitter should ban my mother."

The case against Love stems from the accusation she defamed lawyer Rhonda Holmes in a 2010 tweet when she wrote "I was fucking devastated [sic] when Rhonda J Holmes esq of San Diego was bought off. I've been hiring and firing lawyers to help me with this."

Frances has been estranged from her mother since Love claimed Dave Grohl made sexual advances to her daughter. Oh. Dear.........

Make Music Pasadena 2012...GroupLove, Milo Greene...More Please
6.17.12

Picture
Make Music Pasadena outdid themselves this year and we count ourselves lucky to be a part of it.  It seemed to us as though it doubled in size, more stages and as many girls with denim short shorts and Ray-Bans as your heart desired.

With free shuttles from stages, tons of places to grab food and drink and people handing out set lists and maps the organization was impeccable.Stages were split all over Old Town Pasadena, electronica, Musician's Institute stage, even a stage outside the local church and the main Indie stage on Colorado Blvd.

There was a lot of local love on the Indie Stage, with the last two acts Milo Greene and GroupLove.  There were some sound problems as Milo Greene took to the stage pushing back set times by a half hour. Milo Greene had a lot of local love from the crowd and the band seemed truly appreciative of the support.  They put on a good show, mellower than we expected, but got a lot of love from the festival goers, especially when they played their track '1957'. This performance is sure to be one that will catapult their profile in the Los Angeles music scene.

We had huge expectations for GroupLove and we can say they blew every single one of them out of the water. From the second the band pounced on stage it was evident this genuinely eccentric mix of musicians were made to perform.  The thousands and thousands of fans were so tightly confined within the barriers it must have been miserable in the heat, but you would never know, as everyone appeared transfixed on the full out screaming joy GroupLove gave out.

Too many bands have affected eccentricities, but this is not GroupLove. There does seem to be something a little off-kilter about all of them, but when combined the madness works perfectly.  Smartly, the band left their monster hits 'Colors' and 'Tongue Tied' for their encore but the entire show's energy palpably moved the crowd in one direction. Huge bouncing drums (courtesy of longjohn and striped sock wearing Ryan Rubin) and copy rite-worthy dance moves from Hannah Hooper got the festival-goers to experience a show like non-other that day. Make Music Pasadena was the finale of their recent tour and there seem a resonating joy that their hometown was their final gig.

GroupLove are a band that know no bounds, this is merely the beginning for them and we advise you catch them as soon as you can. They are a band that not only have that talent to write thoughtful, spiritual, playful lyrics; the ability to connect with the audience so intuitively, but have a stage presence like we haven't seen in a while.  Their music is music for the Gods, loving, happy, soul searching, genuine and above all, just plain amazing. You got us GroupLove!

The EPIC Cribs Played The El Rey
6.15.12

Picture
We had a good idea that The Cribs were going to put on a great show on Friday, when they played the El Rey, and like always, we weren't wrong.

The British lads stormed the stage and showed L.A. how the British do it. The Cribs were the epitome of the dirt, raw energy and booming Indie tunes we expected.

The Jarmen brothers took to the stage and gave the audience an hour long set of a mix of classics and tracks from their new album, 'In The Belly Of The Brazen Beast' at one point asking the audience from requests, however the packed El Rey all screaming at once didn't really work that well, "it sounds like they're booing us, are they booing us?" asked lead singer Gary Jarmen.

Somehow the Wakefield lads remained effortletless cool and dedicated to the music as people invaded the stage, one cocky girl grabbed Gary Jarmen and kissing his sweat soaked face as Jarmen smirked and carried on belting it down the mic.

Q Magazine has proclaimed The Cribs are "the biggest cult band in the UK" and you can consider us devoted followers.

Billy Corgan's Fighting Words-"I'll piss on Radiohead"
6.12.12

Picture
{Image Via mspc.com}
Oh dear, someone is not too happy with that famous band from Oxford.....

Smashing Pumpkin's frontman Billy Corgan lashed out at Radiohead while speaking about the role rock music plays in popular culture. Corgan claimed Radiohead were a symbol of the current culture of "valuation" which he detests.

"I'll piss on fucking Radiohead, because of all this pomposity...I'm so fucking sick of it, and nobody seems to tire of it."

You know what else is really annoying? Angry frontman from a once epic band who like to air their jealousy in radical statements....

GIG OF THE DAY: The Tallest Man On Earth @ The Wiltern
6.12.12

Picture
{Image Via NoSnobsAllowed.tv}
Head down to The Wiltern tonight to check out Kristian Matsson aka The Tallest Man On Earth.  The Swede has been compared to Dylan by many, this folk, indie lad has been around for a while, check him out so you can be the one to claim 'oh yeah, I saw him years ago' when he's selling out the Hollywood Bowl.  Niiiicee...

Shirley Manson, The Music Industry Is A "Dinosaur"
6.10.12

Picture
{Image Via Sackboy.tripod.com}
We still can't get over how Garbage remain as solid a band as they have been since they first came on the scene two decades ago, but they have, and we love them.

Speaking with Metro, Shirley Manson has aired her grievances regarding the music industry's inability to keep up with how young people want their music,

"It's a shell of what it once was and the industry hasn't got it's head around the fact a lot of young people don't listen to the radio or buy records - the industry has been slow to adapt and become a dinosaur...The good thing about the collapse is it's got rid of characters who have no interest in music. The workers left at the companies are passionate and care about bands."

Manson is no stranger to speaking her mind, she recently halted a gig in Atlantic City to throw a man out when he punched a female fan, telling the crowd, "Dude, never hit a fucking woman, what is wrong with you man?"

Lauryn Hill Faces Hard Time For Tax Evasion
6.7.12

Picture
{Image Via Lastfm.com}
A lawyer once told us, "You may be lucky enough to get away with any crime in this country, but they will always get you on tax evasion"; someone should have told this to Lauryn Hill.

According to Rolling Stone, Ms Hill has failed to file taxes for 2005, 2006 and 2007 in a time period where she earned over $1.8 million.  Hill will appear in court in New Jersey on June 29th to face three counts of evading tax payments and faces up to a year in jail as well as a $100,000 fine.

Remember kids, pay your goddamn taxes!

Tupac Hologram Makers Bring Elvis Back Too....
6.6.12

Picture
{Image Via Elvis.com}
Lads, seriously, can you just stop? Once was great, groundbreaking, shocking-but creating whole tours of a dead music legend is just too much...

Digital Domain media have revealed their plans to produce an Elvis hologram, that will go on tour, reports Vanity Fair.

"Elvis is the most iconic, most recognised performer on the planet, and we are thrilled to have been chosen to bring new performances and original shows where fans can have their own, new experiences of Elvis."

Somehow it just leaves us all a little cold. We can't imagine anything more souless than watching a hologram of a dead music legend 'singing' to his past hits. No thanks.

Are You Ready For Make Music Pasadena?

Picture
{Image Via MakeMusicPasadena.org}
We still can't quite figure out how we are all lucky enough to have this festival for free-but we are not going to argue it!

Last year's Make Music Pasadena, had a brilliant turn out, tons of people lined the blocked off Old Pasadena streets; and watched the numerous fantastic bands and milled around the stalls and mini dance parties.

If you only go to one festival this summer-(but don't, go to ALL of the ones we recommend!)-head to Pasadena on June 16th and see the EPIC Grouplove, Grimes, Milo Greene and more.

Go here, get all the info, and we will see your beautiful faces in Pasadena.

Punk music icon Patti Smith has recently opened up about collaborating with Tim Burton's one true love, Johnny Depp.

Smith tells Spinner that she spoke with Depp about an idea for the song while she sang down the line to him, "Then Johnny said he would send it to me so I wouldn't forget....when I got it, he'd put drums, guitars, everything!"

The track, as well as a tribute to Amy Winehouse and a cover of Neil Young's 'After The Gold Rush', will be Smith's first album since her 2007 covers album 'Twelve'. The album 'Banga' was released earlier this week.

Silverlake Jubilee Festival-Fun In The-Not-So-Hot, Sun...
5.27.12

Picture
Hey lads and ladettes, we hope you joined us at Silverlake Jubilee this weekend.  We had a wicked time, only disappointed by the no-show of FIDLAR due to the illness of a band member.  But we drank and danced the pain away to Kinky, VirtualBoy, LettingUpDespiteGreatFaults and tons more.

The Jubilee had a mellow start, with people filtering in and perusing the many stalls of spices, LPs, clothes and other pretty random objects; however when the music kicked in we all descended upon either the Hoover Stage or Sunset-both providing a summer soundtrack.

As the sun came down the cool air forced the crowds to huddle and head to 4100 bar or El Cid to warm up, dance to not so live music, but end the evening well.  The crowds took a while to come down, and turn out seemed a little reduced this year, but it didn't take away from the wicked atmosphere the locals always bring in full force.

Jubilee Festival This Weekend!

Forget going to a shitty bbq with people you don't really like this weekend; come to Silverlake Jubilee Festival instead!

The massive festival heads into it's third year and this is likely to be better than ever.  Only $20 a ticket, the festival boasts tons of bands, including Kinky, Fidlar, Wildcat! Wildcat!; five stages, free block party and dancing till morning-pretty good right?

Taking place both Saturday and Sunday, with the free block party rounding up the nights, this is the L.A. festival not to be missed.  Head over to here to check out line-up and all the other info.  We will see you there friends!

The Actual Bridge In RHCP's Under The Bridge, Is Right Around The Corner...
5.24.12

Picture
Have you ever wondered where exactly the bridge is that Anthony Kiedis is talking about in The Red Hot Chilli Pepper's iconic song Under The Bridge? Well, if you live in Los Angeles, it's closer than you think.

Vulture.com has finally got to the bottom of the mystery that Kiedis has spent years keeping quiet about. In Kiedis' autobiography Scar Tissue he claims he spent the day "downtown with fucking gangsters shooting speedballs under a bridge" , but always refused to name the exact whereabouts. But now Mark Haskell Smith claims the bridge is in MacArthur Park in downtown Los Angeles,

"Inside, it looked like a school art project had been painted over decades of tagging, layers of violent history under a family friendly mural… but not that long ago it was the stomping ground of gangbangers and dope slingers..."It must be the bridge in the song. It links Sixth and Union — the intersection Kiedis claims he was walking toward [in Scar Tissue]— with the drug dealers at Seventh and Hoover. And, unlike the other bridges, it provides a discreet location for private time with personal demons."

If you plan a trip down there, we recommend you go in the daytime or, if venturing after dark, bring a few bodyguards and a backpack full of mace.....

The Stone Roses First Gig In 16 Years
5.24.12

Picture
{Image Via NME.com}
And the legends return....

After 16 years The Stone Roses returned to the stage playing a free surprise gig at Warrington Parr Hall. Playing to Liam Gallagher who sat in attendence on the balcony, The Roses opened with the glorious "I Wanna Be Adored" and knocked out all the classics incluiding "Waterfall" and "She Bangs The Drums".

By all accounts Brown's vocals were dead on, the band seemed well rehearsed and comfortable to be back together on familiar turf.  Fans had queued all day to get the chance to see the legends back in their rightful place on stage and they weren't disappointed.

The show was a warm up to the band's upcoming European tour beginning in Barcelona next month.

So glad to see them back.

The Hudson Block Party 2012!
5.22.12

Picture
The Hudson pulled it off again this year with epic results!

Bigger and better than last year, people began swarming to Santa Monica and Crescent Heights early in the day to get their sunburn and beer on.  The neighbors may have been a bit pissed, but festival goers were treated to a classic, summer block party, with a great line-up and the potential to become one of L.A's finest festivals.

Adventure Gallery were a highlight with their strangely matched group that happened to work out perfectly-you know, one guy dressed like a pirate, one with a suit jacket on in 90 degree weather, and two members that looked about 15....that being said they put on a wicked show. They were certainly a band that sparked our interest so we've made them our Video Of The Week.  We think this is a band we need to keep our eye on...

The Neighbourhood were dirty, filthy, disgusting-just how we like them. The girls swayed to 'Sweater Weather' and admired the many grabs the lead singer made to his crotch...almost as if he was constantly making sure it was still there....don't worry, it remained in place throughout the whole show.

Saint Motel came on later in the day to show why they really are becoming one of the best bands out of L.A. in recent years. Kicking off with their new single "1997" which lead into the highly infectious "Puzzle Pieces" their Los Angeles fan base came out in full. Listen to us when we say-go see these guys whenever you get a chance, because we have no doubt that this time next year they will be selling out Hollywood Palladium....

White Rabbits were the highly anticipated headliners and as the sun set and the eclipse had come and gone White Rabbits brought their power to The Hudson stage.  The band is next off to Canada, then a mini tour of North America, ending at Lollapaloza.  Be sure to get your sticky hands on a copy of their latest release 'Milk Famous'

Not one to hold back these Brits.....Blur's guitarist Graham Coxon has spoken out about the influx of reality music tv.  Coxon protests musicians should do it "the right way" and overnight recognition and success does not a musician make....

"To get better at anything you have to practice a lot...It doesn't just appear."

"I've only got myself to please. When I'm on my own in my front room with a guitar, there's no one going to say to me, 'That's really great' if I play some old rubbish," he added. "I do believe in doing things right. Which is why The X Factor and The Voice are so disgraceful to me."

Good point....

Ed Sheeran seems to be doing anything he can to stay away from any type of rock 'n' roll image, now claiming he would never sleep with a groupie.

After being asked by blogger Perez Hilton if he'd ever take up a groupie on an offer of a good time Sheeran responded, ''I've always been in long term relationships for the whole of my life, so no"

Hmmm, we have the suspicion Sheeran only answered that way in case Perez was one of those groupies in question....

Alright, Back To Music...You Don't Think You Could Love Arctic Monkeys More? Not So...
5.14.12

Picture
Just when you thought the wickedly talented, disgusting young and amazingly modest Alex Turner couldn't get any better-he does...

Speaking with Pitchfork this week, Turner and drummer Matt Helders, admitted they used to dress up as Oasis and pretend to be them during their school assembly.

"Me and Matt and some of our friends put on 'Morning Glory' – we 'played' some tennis racquets and pretended to be Oasis. Matt was Liam Gallagher, he had the bucket hat on. I was the bass player."

Turner went on to name the legendary (What's The Story) Morning Glory as the album that had most influence for him as a musician.

Now that Arctic Monkey's have carved their name into the list of top Indie Rock bands from the UK, it goes to show what a little make believe can do....

CBGB To ReOpen?
5.8.12

Picture
It can't be true-can it? Well...maybe...

Once the epicenter of punk music, New York club CBGB, has been closed since 2006, however there is talk that a group of investors have bought the assets and want to turn the venue into part of an annual music festival.

The four-day festival is due to kick off on July 5 and take place at around 30 venues across the city, showcasing 300 bands. Tim Hayes, one of the investors commented,

"We're trying to continue the idea of supporting live music, making a lot of noise and being a part of New York City. The festival is one way we can do it. Eventually the club will be another way we can do it."

Sounds wicked to us and a great way to keep the legendary club alive and a crucial part of punk music history.

{Image Via HollywoodReporter.com}
The music world-and others far beyond it-are in mourning again today as it was announced Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys (also known as MCA) has died.

Although no cause of death has been announced, it is well known that Yauch has been fighting a long battle against both preaortic gland and lymph node cancer.  It was reported that Yauch had been responding well to treatment, however was too ill to attend the induction of The Beastie Boys into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame last month.

With a career spanning over 30 years, Yauch has bridged genre bending gaps in music, and is a talent that will be sorely missed.

The pulse of music beats a little slower tonight, rest well Adam.

Ms Love Loses Rights To Kurt's Image
5.3.12

Picture
{Image Via enjoy-your-style.com}
With all the numerous rumors of being broke, law suits and people stealing from Courtney Love over the years; none of us were really sure where she stood in regards to her husband's legacy.

Well you can rest easy knowing that Love's estranged 19 year old daughter Frances Bean has been granted control over all her late father's likeness, image and name.

The Huffington Post reports: "The documents show that Love agreed to step down as acting manager of End of Music LLC, the corporation responsible for generating money from Cobain's publicity rights, when she received a $2.75 million loan from Frances' trust fund in 2010. Until Love pays the loan back, she won't receive any profits made from her late husband's publicity rights."

After Love sold 25% of the rights to Cobain's music in 2005, it is reported she considered selling the rest as she is convinced the music is 'cursed.' This story just keeps getting sadder as the years go by...

We know we are among millions who are feeling this, and by no means are they new to the music scene, but we gotta admit it; we really are kinda obsessed with them.

Sameer Gadhia's lead vocals, are the epitome of Indie Rock gold, arrangement, lyrics and cohesion of the whole six piece, just makes sense.  We can't stop listening to them, and neither will you once you give them a proper listen.  Summertime festival staples for sure.

Arctic Monkeys Talk Follow Up To 'Suck It And See'

Picture
{Image Via Soundcheckmusicblog.com}
Arctic Monkeys may be pretty busy touring with The Black Keys across the US right now, but they are already talking album number five.  Drummer Matt Helders said,

"I think this tour ends 19 May and then we've got one festival in Atlantic City at the end of June, so that's the last show we're doing and then after that it's up for grabs whether we go back in the studio or not. It's not like we've written loads on tour, it's some ideas and riffs flying around, things we've put together in soundchecks, but you don't get much of a soundcheck when you're a support band!"

Well for most of us mate, it can't happen soon enough...

Kasabian Have Tricks Up Their Sleeves

Picture
{Image Via fakeplastictunes.com}
The band named after a member of Charles Manson's cult (you knew that-right?) have whetted our appetite for more by declaring, "We've got loads of stuff written for our next album"

According to lead singer Tom Meighan the band has been working a lot on new material, but sadly wont be recording until 2013. Meighan spoke to Absolute Radio saying,
"I think Sergio's got loads of stuff written already. I imagine he has because he never stops writing. So I can't imagine when we're going to record a record, not at the moment, probably next year sometime."

Don't be in too much of a fret; Kasabian are playing both Reading and Leeds festivals, as well as T in the Park and BBC 1's Hackney Weekend-so they are not exactly sitting on their arses for too long.....

We call rubbish on this one...

The last boyfriend of Amy Winehouse, director Reg Traviss, was arrested under suspicion of rape by arrangement on April 5th.

Friends say 35 year old Traviss is devastated by the accusation made by a woman he has known for some time. A source told UK newspaper The Daily Mail "He wants to do everything in his power to fight this."

Traviss was bailed and is due to return to the police station in early July.

We just find this all highly doubtful and wish Reg the best on fighting this all the way.

"It would be cool if it was [released] this year. I always want to release music as soon as possible, but more and more I'm realizing it's something you almost have no control over. We just never want to be in a position [where] when we put out something, we feel could've benefited from more time."

Gotye (real name Wouter De Backer) goes on to say "there's only so many times you can listen to one song"

This may not come to a surprise to anyone, but what is comforting to know is Gotye still loves to play the wicked hit live and doesn't seem to bore too easily.  Refreshing. Keep is up Gotye!

Guess how Nashville's police wasted tax payers money over the weekend?  Searching for a spliff thrown out the window of a hotel by Wiz Khalifa...nice.

While Sir Khalifa was in Nashville over the weekend, guests reported a strong smell of weed coming from his room. As soon as the cops were called Khalifa supposedly threw the substance out the window.  The cops then searched for the lost smoke and served Wiz Khalifa with a citation.

Well, that was a productive weekend, cheers.

Anyone Else Sick Of Hologram's Yet?  Now The Tupac Maker Talks Elvis...
4.25.12

Picture
There is no doubt that Tupac's 'appearance' at Coachella was awesome, fantastically imaginative, and utterly unexpected; however with everyone talking holograms, it's got too much already.

Now we hear that the maker of the Tupac hologram wants to create an Elvis version to tour with Justin Beiber...yeah...exactly....Sanj Sarati even suggested some more musicains,

"Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, oh and Michael Jackson would be the ultimate one. Maybe even Whitney Houston."

At least Dre is talking sense claiming Tupac was for 'Coachella only'.  Good-can we move on now?

You know what is more astonishing than the fact Ronnie Wood is still alive? It is the fact that The Stones are still together writing new music.

"It's like working out for the Olympics or something. You've got to go into training. So we're going to go into training."

The Stones are preparing to celebrate 50 years together next year and embarking on a world tour. This is true evidence of rock and roll, do you hear that pseduo self proclaimed rock stars out there??? Learn from the best.

Picture

There is a massive grin on our Brit faces due to the news that our love Lily Allen is back in the studio recording new material.

We have been Lily lovers from the first day we heard 'Smile'. Lily brought a wickedly new fresh breathe of air to British music.  No-one was more critical of Allen than herself, but us and many millions of others loved her style, wit, lyrical originality and London edge.

Welcome back Lily, we can't wait to hear your new music and we love you girl.

The Beatle's Sons To Form A Band...?

Picture
{Image Via music-mix.ew.com}
Rumors have run amok for a while now that music's biggest legend's offspring's are to form a band as a homage to thier fathers.

James McCartney recently told the BBC that some of The Beatle's sons are getting together to talk about the possibility of forming a supergroup themselves.

"I don't think it's something that Zak wants to do. Maybe Jason [drummer and one of Starr's other sons] would want to do it. I'd be up for it. Sean seemed to be into it, Dhani seemed to be into it. I'd be happy to do it."

In one word-EPIC.

Very Exciting NME This Week....

Picture
Check out this week's NME cover.  Mr Doherty hasn't graced the mag's cover in a while and this week's interview looks like it will be a doozy.

With all the shit and sordid stories surrounding Pete this past year I'm surprised NME aren't dedicating more than one issue to him.

It will for sure be an interesting read and we're more than a little bit intrigued to see if there is any mention about Amy Winehouse's ghost apparently appearing to Doherty causing him to flee the country...

Adele Would Love "To Collaborate With Beyonce"

Picture
{Image Via Indianphotos.net}
Our girl Adele has told a French radio station she would love to one day work with megastar Beyonce.
Adele said,

"I adore Beyonce, I've been listening to her since I was about 11. I think her work as an artist and a singer is enviable in terms of the length of her career."

We can't say we would be thrilled to see this, as we've claimed beforehand we are old school Adele fans, 19, was our album...however, Adele did mention in her interview that most of her musical heros are dead so she had to cross a few people off the list to get to Beyonce.

Skrillex Declares "I don't care if people don't like me"

Picture
Dubstep's current hero Skrillex, has spoken to Pitchfork claiming he gets it when people say the don't like him. He goes on,

"I don't care if people hate me. I mean, I get it. When you were young, you were like, 'The Backstreet Boys are gay!"

Skrillex points out he was asked to collaborate with the Foo Fighters and Deadmau5 at this years Grammy's but turned it down,

"And, all due respect to all those artists, but that's not what I do. I don't play on TV. My performances are different because you're captivated more by everything around you rather than just staring at something... It's not something you can capture on the Grammys."

Hmm, well we hope he's as cool with being forgotten in a year when everyone is over Dubstep; and every clubber with a MacBook stops thinking they are a dj.

Madonna/LMFAO News (Sorry...)

Picture
Big news for the once relevent, once young performance artist Madonna, today.

If you enjoy reading Tweets from your favorite musicians (that aren't actually ever written by the actual artist) well now you can add Madonna to the list.  As of today Madonna is joining Twitter, you can follow her and read all about her new album, tour dates and the newest 16 year old she is dating to stay young...Actually she is only joining for one day to answers questions about her new album-just as bad.

On another Madonna related note, the lyrical genius' that are LMFAO-that have created such intellectually stimulating songs such as 'I'm Sexy And I Know It' and 'Shots'-have been named as openers for Madonna on her London gigs. Look, London is having enough hard times trying to get ready for The Olympics, can't you give them a break? Shame.

Remember 90's Pop Group S Club 7? No? Well Anyway...

Picture
...They have announced they are reforming much to the glee of their many (?) fans.

They are all older, gained weight and don't have much of a career left.  So happy Wednesday, and book your ticket to their University tour.

Ok, Here Is The Thing With Katy Perry...

Picture
Firstly, we find her a complete phony. Yep, we said it. She is.  You either have an eccentric, dynamic, birthright to create enigmatic music or you don't. Perry doesn't.

We pulled this photo to show that however much you proclaim you are 'off the wall' blue-haired crazy, the truth will out, and it has. A quote to live by, 'the lady doth protest too much', and this is her. Proclamations of "I'm crazy, I'm original" does not an original songwriter make.

Perry has come under further scrutiny this week with her attempt at covering 'Niggas In Paris'  (changed to 'Ninjas in London') from Kanye West and Jay-z's 'Watch The Throne'...watch it and cringe....

SXSW'd Out?

Picture
We hope you have been following our tweeting madness regarding SXSW 2012.  It was a crazy year for music and this year is going to be pretty epic from what was seen at SXSW.

We don't know about you but we're guessing you may be a little SXSW'd out...however....we don't care....so here is our personal Top 5 of the best of the best

-Eminem Surprise Appearance at 50 Cent's Show

-Jack White's epic solo incarnation

-Mickey Avalon being dirtier than usual

-Fiona Apple bringing back the love

-Saint Motel, simply because this is their year, they are blowing up and they deserve every single aspect of it. Amazing band.

We could go on but we are suffering from post-partum....deal with it.....

All The Best Of SXSW Coming At Your Face ASAP

Picture
With one of the top music festivals in the world kicking off this week, we will be doing our best to highlight the top bands to see, acts not to miss and the best parties to get your drinkies on, so stay tuned and you'll be sorted.

We feel excited like it's Christmas Eve, but insead of leaving out sherry and mince pies, we think some Stellas and some Malboro Lights may be more adequate....

Shhh, Don't Tell Anyone, But Now Is The Time To Buy Re-Sale Coachella Tix

Picture
{Image Via Coachella.com}
The two weekend's of Coachella sold out in a hot minute as expected, so a lot of you are looking to other outlets to snag a ticket or 2.

Well, we all know a load of the people who bought tickets last month were only to turn a profit.  Depending on the seller and the timing, the tickets that originally sold for $300 for the weekend can skyrocket; but according to online sources now is the time to grab them.

Accordingly to some online analysis, right now is the time you can get tickets for as low as $400.  Search online for reputable sellers, and check it out yourself.

We remember buying scalped tickets off dodgy guys hanging outside the venue, now it's all teched up....ahh the good old days....

Grammy Collaborations News

It has just been announced that the Foo Fighters will be sharing the stage with Deadmau5 at Sunday's upcoming Grammy Awards.

This Sunday at The Staple's Center in downtown L.A., the Grammys will celebrate electronic music with Dave Grohl collaborating with Deadmau5 remixing the band's track 'Rope'.

Other artists joining each other to perform on Sunday include Dave Guetta, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown. Interesting to see how this will work out....

UltraDigital Films Upcoming Amy Winehouse Documentary

Picture
As we previously mentioned we were asked to be a part of an epic new documentary chronicling the rise, the impact on music, and the ultimate tragedy of Amy Winehouse.

Well, the time is approaching lads and ladettes, we are getting a screening tomorrow of the final cut and have already heard amazing things about the finished result.

It will be officially released February 12th-a truthful, honest and raw ode to one of the most influential musicians of our time.

Lana Del Rey Claims She "May Never Make Another Album"

Picture
Hmmmm, this is just kind of irritating...

The rise of New York rich kid Lana Del Rey has been sudden and thrust her into the vocabulary of all music followers. Del Rey (real name Elizabeth Grant) has now claimed that she may never make another album according to an interview with Vogue magazine.

"I don't think I'll write another record. What would I say? I feel like everything I wanted to say, I've said already."

Color us skeptical and rather annoyed...

MIA's Middle Finger

Picture
Well, well well...another Superbowl, another weak attempt at controversy.

If you are unaware, MIA, Madonna and LMFAO performed the half time show for the Superbowl yesterday and social media outlets were set ablaze with the suggestion that while performing, MIA flipped everyone off.
MIA is now reportedly set to pay the fine that was incurred; according to certain sources MIA signed a contract agreeing to pay any fines that were the result of her performance.

Maybe MIA could claim ignorance, because being a Brit, something as timid as raising a middle finger would hardly be cause for concern across the pond.

If MIA pulled this stunt for a little publicity then we wish she could have been more imaginative.

Snoop Dog Arrested For Drug Possession

Picture
1) No-one is surprised and 2) Hasn't he got an automatic pass?

While on tour in Texas over the weekend Snoop has arrested after sniffer dogs detected what else but weed on his tour bus.  Snoop freely admitted ownership as he has a prescription for weed in California but Texas has a zero tolerance policy that could land the rapper in jail for up to 180 days.

Snoop is due to appear in court on January 20th.

Bands You Don't Care About, But Wonder Where They Went....Keane

Picture
This new section is purely for the people that in the middle of cooking a chicken or taking a shower say to themselves, "hey, I wonder what ever happened to ( )". You do that too right...??
Anyway, first up is Keane, yeah Keane; you remember, the lead singer Tom Chaplin (super tall with a very large face) who claimed the rock lifestyle was too much for him and became addicted to baby aspirin or something....well, what ever happened to them?

The private school boys who formed the 5 piece band gained mainstream success with the release of 'Hopes and Fears' in 2004 and entered the post Brit-pop movement of the time. There second studio album 'Under The Iron Sea' garnered huge success and won multiple awards both in the UK and abroad.

If you've been missing them (they did actually release an album beginning of 2010) they are currently in the studio working on their fourth album that should be due for release this summer. If someone can keep away from the medicine cabinet.....

Black Keys And Nickelback In One Sentence

Picture
[Via Sweetlyrics.com]
Remember when Nickelback was cool, relevant and innovative? No, neither do we and the Black Keys are claiming due to bands like this, rock is dead.
Drummer Patrick Carney declared in a recent interview that people aren't able to appreciate true rock because due to bands like Nickelback-people don't know what rock is.

" Rock and roll is dying because people became OK with Nickelback becoming the biggest band in the world"

Nickelback's response?

"Thanks to The Black Keys for calling us the biggest band in the world!"

So the first music war of 2012 is between The Black Keys and Nickelback? Jesus.....where's Courtney Love getting naked and drunk when you need her?

A Little S.C.U.M Baby On The Way

Picture
It was annouced today that London Indie rocker Tom Cohen from S.C.U.M and fiancee Peaches Geldof are expecting their first child together. Just recently engaged, the couple appears to be overjoyed at the news.
Peaches better saddle herself and her baby up for a busy year.  Beginning with UK shows and the NME Awards set at London's Bush Hall in February; S.C.U.M are next set to attend SXSW then embark on a full on attack of the American market in 2012.

When Covers Are Done Right....

Let me introduce you to ATLAS a newly formed ensemble that has taken YouTube (and anyone who has seen their latest vid) and shown them how to do covers right .  The four piece got together in a Victorian (supposedly haunted) house in Sonoma and recorded live solidly for a week.  With a film crew on hand, this little gem was created.
A cover of Deadmau5/Madeon's Raise Your Weapon-it has even garnered support and praise from Mr Madeon himself-telling his 23,000+ followers on Twitter to check it out.

New Amy Winehouse Documentary

Picture
There will be a lot of documentaries being released in the upcoming months and years attempting to capture who Amy was and the impact of her career.
We were recently approached and asked to be a part of an upcoming documentary chronicling Amy’s life, her music and her impact on the world.  After filming our segment today we are really excited about this film that will explain who Amy was and do justice to her memory.

The docu should be finished early December-we’ll keep you updated.....

Is Beyonce Really Faking It?

Picture
You will not see Beyonce often on this website, but the intrigue surrounding her supposedly faked pregnancy has captured us somewhat.  Since Beyonce announced her pregnancy at the VMAs this summer, her bump seems to have been deflating and inflating at a very strange rate.

Rumors started to buzz when a very odd video appeared of Beyonce on the Australian television show Sunday Night on which she told the interviewer her baby was due in February 2012. However, in the screen shot  you can clearly see her ‘baby bump’ folding in on itself. From this, two theories arose:

1) Either Ms Knowles wanted to make a grand declaration at the MTV Awards show and wore a prosthetic bump to exaggerate the pregnancy....OR

2) Beyonce is simply NOT pregnant and is using a surrogate to have her child, which she is trying to hide from the media and fans.

Ok-they do seem pretty far fetched and the work of an over zealous blogger-but the photo does raise some interesting questions....

CONFIRMED! The Stone Roses Are Back!

Picture
Are you ready to be adored? The Stone Roses have finally confirmed what we all suspected-they have officially reformed and will be back playing gigs in 2012.

The Manchester legends-frontman Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire, bassist Mani and drummer Reni-announced the reunion at a press conference held in London on Tuesday afternoon  Brown proclaimed:

“This is a live resurrection, and you're invited, so you'd better be there.”

The reunited band revealed they are working on new material and when asked if a new album was on the cards Brown said, “ "We hope so. But we said that before didn't we?"

The Roses revealed they will be playing two homecoming gigs on June 29th and June 30th 2012 at Heaton Park.  Tickets for the shows will go on sale 9:30am (BST) this Friday-Good luck to everyone trying to get tickets, it will be a tough job, but if you’re up for the challenge head over to Thestoneroses.org for more info.

90's Indie Lords Ash To Record New Album..?

Picture
With MTV bringing back Pop Up video and The Stone Roses announcing they are to reunite a warm 90's feeling is cascading over us, then we find out our old pals Ash may be recording a new album.
Tim Wheeler, the bands frontman, was speaking with BBC6 Music and recanted his former statement that the album format is dead.

"I think the album is probably still the best medium because in a way it's almost the most economic one when there's so little money coming in to make music. This probably offers the best way of doing it because you don't have to market it for very long whereas a year of doing a singles campaign is quite challenging."

Meanwhile Wheeler is finishing up his Christmas album with girlfriend Emmy The Great due out November 21st titled "This is Christmas"

Possible Stone Roses Reunion..??

Picture
The legends, and some may say godfathers, of British Indie music The Stone Roses have hinted at a possible reunion.

In an strange response to NME.com when questioned about the possibility the band will reunite, Reni The Stone Rose’s former drummer, said:

“Not before 9T will I wear the hat 4 the Roses again”

Ambiguous much?  Rumors has been racing since last April when Ian Brown and guitarist John Squire had met up for the first time since 1996. A pretty big music executive refuses to confirm or deny the rumors, fanning more of the flames to this quickly growing fire.  Will they be back on the road as early as Spring 2012? That’s what we’ve heard, and like every 90’s kid out there we are getting very excited....

Happy Birthday NME!

Picture
Legendary Brit music mag NME turns 15 this week, so by British standards it’s surpassed the legal drinking age and should be comfortably settled in the local pub by now.

The mag that prides itself on telling you about the latest indie kings and queens is celebrating by announcing the best 150 tracks of the past 15 years. Take a gander at their site to see if you agree with their choices NME. Very proud to see Miss Marling make the list....

Pancakes, Booze, Zombies and Art

Picture
Cancel whatever you are doing on October 21st and/or 22nd (take your pick) because for only a fiver you can play witness to a mesh up of all the pancakes you can eat, a ton of booze, live music, live performance art and a zombie fashion show. None of it makes sense, but this underground art show has been growing in popularity through word of mouth for only a few years now.

Check out the weird and wonderful Pancakes and Booze.

Grab A Pint At L.A. Beer Week

Picture
Beer week has hit Los Angeles and it is the perfect opportunity to sample new beers and ales...and to justify your alcoholism.  LA Beer Week runs from October 10th-23rd and stretches from every corner of the city, from dive bars to overpriced gastropubs.

Take a looky at their website and see what pubs near you are doing to celebrate the drunkeness.

SHOCKER-Pete Doherty In Legal Trouble...Again

Picture
Our mate (and one time musical genius) Pete Doherty, is again facing legal drama due to a car crash that occured in 2009.  His manager Andrew Boyd was driving Doherty's car without insurance when he ran over a church worker and left him with 'severe brain damage.'

Doherty was in court yesterday to be told he is liable for the accident and the injured party can persue him for damages.  Doherty could be forced to pay hundreds of thousands of pounds to the victim-but does he even have that?
Pete ruled the British music scene at one point and has so much to still prouduce. Hey Pete, can you just stay out of jail and start writing again....please? We miss you.

We're Kinda Obsessed With.....Mickey Avalon

Picture
At ABritInTheSun.com we are finding ourselves Kinda Obsessed With...Micky Avalon. Mickey has been haunting the streets of L.A. for a long time spreading his dirty, clever, witty music all over town.  After the Sunset Strip Festival this summer and his show at The Viper Room, it reminded us all that Mickey is still kicking the shit out of L.A. stereotypes and producing filthy greatness. If you’ve not heard of Mickey or need more of him check him out at MickeyAvalon.

Oh, and Mickey’s tattoo that reads ‘Thank You’ across his lower stomach was created because he was going through a period where he was having sex with so many hot girls, he wanted to show his gratitude.....now do you love him?

R.E.M Split

Picture
It’s the end of the world as we know it...The legends that are R.E.M announced yesterday that they are splitting up.
R.E.M has spanned generations and been a together for over 30  years. On a personal note-having seen R.E.M in Hyde Park, London and at The Isle of White Festival we made their music our soundtrack for so long and we were truly saddened to hear the news.
Tributes have poured in from all over the world since the band announced parting ways on their website, saying:

“To all our fans and friends: as REM, and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.”

Some critics claim R.E.M haven’t been relavent since the 90’s and their split comes as no surprise, but to their fans it is a very sad day. RIP REM.

Raconteurs End Three Year Break

Picture
The first MI Fest, which took place just 75 miles southwest of Detroit this weekend, rolled out the welcome mat to the Raconteurs, who played their first major gig after a three year hiatus.

We’ve missed the eclectic Detroit rock boys who have been taking a break for the past few years while working on their many other musical projects.  After playing several minor warm-up gigs in Nashville last week, they landed back onto the main stage at MI Fest and continued where they left off.
Unfortunately festival goers were left disappointed as the Raconteurs failed to showcase any new music but according to sources their chemistry still remained, as did the appeal of 2006’s Broken Boy Soldiers and 2008’s Consolers of the Lonely.

If you want to catch the band as they revive themselves you have two more chances this year at New Orleans’ Voodoo Music Experience in October, and the new Orlando Calling Festival in November.

Adele, Tony Bennett and Lady Blah Blah Pay Tribute To Winehouse At 2011 VMA's

Picture
Any friend of this site, knows our great love for the late Amy Winehouse, and we agree there should be an epic tribute to her at this Sunday's VMA's-but including Lady Blah Blah is just gross.  Adele is a fellow Brit who understood and appreciated Winehouse's music and Tony Bennett had just recorded with Amy and was a big hero of hers...but the third performer....
Lady Blahhh is not a genius, is not original, and loves to latch herself onto anything to bring herself a little more PR.  She needs to stop comparing herself to great artists and face the fact she is the monster of the music world. Blah.

SUNSET JUNCTION 2011-CANCELLED!

Picture
Yep, after 31 continuous years Sunset Junction Festival is not taking place this weekend due to The City of Los Angeles upping their permit fees at the last minute.  The organizers only managed to raise $100,000 of the $141,000 owed, so the city denied the permits needed.  It’s beyond sad that this epic festival that gives so much back the community is being shut down so close to the opening day.
Although the headliners Hanson were a dubious choice, I think they would have been a bit more welcome if they could have coughed up the extra $41,000. Come on, you know they earned bank off ‘Mmm Bop’-the donation could have helped your rep boys!

SSMF 2011-The Dirty Heads

Picture
It’s summer, it’s hot and you’re drinking a beer.  You know what you need as your soundtrack? The Dirty Heads. Everyone and their brother will compare them to Sublime, which is accurate, but not always fair. The Dirty Heads have been together since they met in high school and began writing their own reggae/rock/punk inspired music and acquired their name after a shop owner, they were stealing a 12 pack of beer, from shouted, “come here you little dirty heads!”.

Their set at SSMF this year was hot, dirty and the perfect kick off to the festival. Jared Watson and Dustin Bushnell, the founding members, performed with the sun beating down on them and the crowd echoing the lyrics-making it feel like you were watching them in your own back garden. The Dirty Heads effortlessly engage the crowd and bring ‘90’s Californian funk/punk/rock back with a scowl and a smile.  The gained some new found fans this weekend, for sure.

SSMF 2011

Picture
Sunset Strip Music Festival this year brought out the wounded , the wannabes and the weird. Even the Black Veil Brides look-a-likes didn't take away from the wicked collection of musicians that descended upon Sunset Blvd this year. From BUSH to The Dirty Heads the festival roared it’s way from Thursday to Saturday, ending with Motley Crue’s epic nighttime set.  Although the turn out was good, attendees seemed a little fewer on the ground than last year; but it meant a shorter line for the loos and the beer flow was speedier.
The great thing about SSMF is besides from the bigger bands on the outdoor stages, you can catch new acts on the cusp of greatness playing The Roxy Stage, Whiskey and other surrounding venues.  And catch them we did! If you haven’t heard them already, now’s your chance to observe some of our new obsessions.....Eli James, CHUPO, and YoungBloodHawke.

Check out our Gallery for all the photos from SSMF!  See if you can spy Ms Gwen Stefani supporting her man.....

Alright Kids, Are We All Ready For Tomorrow?

Picture

Alright, well calm down mate, you still have 24 hours to go until Sunset Strip Music Festival officially begins. ABritInTheSun is excited to bring you all the latest news as we will be down there capturing the best of music (and booze) to bring to you as soon as the first drop of sweat falls from the singer's lip.
We are getting particularly excited for Matt & Kim, Eli James, Bush, Mr Mickey Avalon, Deluka and tons more we can't wait to get our claws into....yum.

Patti Smith Feature Film

Picture
Whispers are abound regarding a new movie adaptation of Patti Smith's memoir Just Kids.
Smith's memoir centers around her relationship with the late photographer Robert Mapplethorphe. It seems Gladiator screenwriter John Logan is already signed to the project which will surely have a very different vibe to it than the previous film centered on Smith, Patti Smith:Dream Of Life.
Seems interesting...And Courtney Love-your a bit too old to play Patti, so don't even think about it....

GIG OF THE DAY/August 3rd

Katy Perry Set To Break Jackson's Record

Picture
Bring out your mourning clothes, it’s a sad day in music.

It looks like Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream' is set to break the record previously held by the King Of Pop himself as she edges closer to scoring five Number One hit singles from the same album on Billboard’s Hot 100. Micheal Jackson held this record with his epic Bad released in 1987, Perry’s sugar-pop album Teenage Dream has already yielded the number one singles,”Teenage Dream”, “California Gurls”, “Firework” and “E.T”; and with “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)” heading to the coveted spot it looks as though the record may be hers.

Is this a reflection of who is buying music or musical taste going down the toilet, so we can all sleep at night, let's side with the former.

Kings Of Leon Management Removing Show Footage

Picture
Why so serious Vector Management? Kings Of Leon’s management firm are removing all footage uploaded on YouTube of their disastrous Dallas show.  Videos shot and uploaded by numerous fans of lead singer Caleb Followill declaring, “I’m gonna go backstage and I’m gonna vomit,I’m gonna drink a beer”, are being removed as quickly as they are being uploaded.

What is rather intriguing is Vector is removing clips based on copyright infringement, however the clips are focused on Followill’s rambling banter and not the music.  The damage control seems too little too late with fans left frustrated that the band’s 29 upcoming gigs have been cancelled.

It looks like Followill is now acting like the rockstar he’s tried to act for a while, he should down that beer and get back on the road.

Jared Leto Comments On Media's Coverage Of Amy Winehouse's Demons

Picture
Jeff Vespa/WireImage.com
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone 30 Seconds To Mars lead singer Jared Leto spoke of the media’s coverage of Amy Winehouse’s years of substance abuse:

“It seems that many in the press had no problem acting as though her disease were as trivial as the latest 'hot beach bods' spread. Maybe the next time someone exhibits the classic behavior of an addict in trouble, rather than using it as tabloid fodder, more energy could be spent attempting to help the person. It's a heartbreaking loss, not just of an incredibly talented artist, but of a beautiful and blessed young woman in the beginning of her life.”

Valid points.  The magazines paying homage to her life this month insist on including photos of her blacked out which is utterly unnecessary. Remember the legend at her best.

Kings Of Leon Cancel US Tour

Picture
Kings Of Leon
In light of their disastrous Dallas show, Kings Of Leon have pulled the plug on the rest of their US tour.  On Friday they cut their show short as lead singer Caleb Followill left the stage to vomit. The ever reliable spokesperson claimed Followill has “been suffering from vocal issues and exhaustion”
All tickets will be refunded but with their upcoming touring commitments abroad it doesn’t look like their US shows will be rescheduled any time soon.  Sorry Kings Of Leon fans, nothing sucks more than a much anticipated show being cancelled; but on the bright side at least this band is finally acting like the rock stars.

Top Summer Festivals

Picture
Alright, I can go on about the ratio of the size of the UK and the AMAZING festivals they produce in comparison to the US and their lack of a festivals, but I'm shutting up and concentrating on the positive people!
The festival season is half way through and the best is yet to come so I am helping you out and highlighting the festivals you should be at this summer, I'll be at them all, so look out for the beer supping Brit and come say hello.

-Outside Lands Festivals August 12th-14th San Francisco
This is a wicked festival, not only with a great setting and a great line-up but tickets are more than reasonable at $85 for a day pass (Saturday are currently sold out) The lineup includes the epic Arctic Monkeys, The Shins, MGMT, The Roots, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Decemberists, Arcade Fire and a load more of bands that should be on your live gig wish list.  It is a 3-day festival running from mid-morning to late into the evening.  It's taking place in Golden Gate Park and parking is always going to beyond a nightmare, so arrive a few days early and leave the car at home.

-Sunset Junction Festival 27th-28th August Los Angeles
The reason I love this 2-day festival so much is due to the amazingly cheap tickets, the atmosphere and the electic  music the pops up in the relatively small street fair.  So, you're not going to get the huge headliners that you will find at Outside Lands or Coachella, but you still get commercially successful well known bands as well as tons of local bands you get to discover before they hit it big. There are numerous stages and this year there is going to be a dj set from Peaches, Tapes n Tapes, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Hanson (oh yeah!), Ozomatli and tons more.  It is a super family-friendly event with fair rides and stalls for those under 21, then for those of us who like to partake in the other, there are many beer and alcohol stations. This year I'd highly recommend buying the VIP ticket for only $60, you really say better than that.

 -SSMF 18th-20th August Los Angeles
The Sunset Strip Music Festival brings Sunset Blvd to a standstill for 3 days every summer.  It takes place in the hub of Los Angeles musc epicenter. Not only do they have headlining acts on the main stage but all the famous bars and clubs lining the street each have their own mini festival taking place inside.  Literally hundreds of bands perform over the 3 day period and the atmosphere is caotic as well as epic.  People come to hear good music and party as hard as Sunset will allow.  This said the place really does get crazy packed and with the August heat there is never any room to breathe, so do what the smart people do and go VIP. For August 20th VIP it's $120 which really is good considering it allows you to escape the crowd and party on the rooftop. This year they are doing a tribute to Motley Crue as well as Nico Vega, The Veronicas, Matt and Kim, Bush, Mickey Avalon taking to the stage.

Amy

Picture
On Saturday July 23rd 2011, a light went out that can never be rekindled. Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London home.

I first discovered Amy Winehouse in 2004 when I switched on t.v. to see Jonathon Ross half way through an interview with a girl with a strikenly thick cockey accent; she was about to perform and I thought it would be interesting to hear what she could do. From that day forward I listened to every song Amy Winehouse ever sang, watched every video I could find of her performing and cherished the music she produced.

Her first album Frank was groundbreaking, an 18 year old writing love songs with such brutal honesty it socked you in the stomach, and left you bereft of breath. Her voice that combined Ella and Sarah Vaughn, with a soul far beyond her years.  I followed her career and told every living soul I could about this London girl that was going to make it so big, and she did.

The grief over her death is understandable if you knew her music. Amy wrote such raw music, you knew her pain and her unending desire to really be loved. Her lyrics were not only articulate and intelligent but they were often so terribly sad.  She loved so very much, and was the ultimate romantic.

I finally met Amy in 2007 as SXSW festival in Austin, when she was beginning to make her mark in the US.  I dragged all my friends to see her and every one of them thank me till this day. She was performing at Emo’s and we ran down the street and went into the beer garden at the back to grab a drink before the show.  I turned around and came face to face with the girl’s who’s music had invaded my very core for many years.  She was eating and laughing with friends while desperately txting between two phones.  She was so very small with this huge mountain of hair, I was hesitant to approach her as I worried she may be a bit worse for wear and wouldn’t want people to come up to her.  I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t and my friend and I asked if we could get a quick photo. She was more than gracious and kind and as we took the photo and exchanged a few words, the last thing I said to her was “don’t ever stop making music Amy’

She went on to perform an acoustic set in this relatively small venue that I reviewed for a publication, and I had never witnessed a performer so effortlessly transfix a crowd.  As I described in my article ‘her vocals were so exquisite and soulful she even sent shivers down the spine of the bar.’

I did not know Amy Winehouse, but I knew her background, her passion, the type of person she was and her talent.  I feel sorry for the fools that are speaking or writing about how ‘expected’ this was, because they obviously never understood her music or what it represented.  The overwhelming sadness of her death is due to who she was and what she created. Amy’s music told stories; stories of desperate loneliness, unrequited love and her constant struggle to find happiness.

Music is one of very few things in life that can change everything and anything and Amy wrote music that did exactly that. She had a voice that was comparable to none, a talent of story telling that is lacking in so much music today, and above everything, a child like honesty.

We all carry our demons with us, and some can live with pushing them down and  carrying on, but others, like Amy, can’t always cope. I believe she never wanted to be a stereotype, to die so young and have so many troubles in her young life, she just wanted to sing.  It’s inconceivable that no one will ever see or hear her again, it is our loss and the Gods’ gain.

It will take a long time to come to terms with the loss of such a soul and I personally feel a part of my heart is where ever Amy is as there will never come again a talent like her.  I know she is flying with 'Eva in paradise'and as the sadness remains, her music will continue to tell her story. Amy Winehouse was a girl that loved intensely and will be loved for eternity.

From me to you, Amy, thank you.

Red Bull Thre3 Style

Picture
This Thursday I will be heading down to SupperClub in Hollywood to experience the battle of dj's in the Red Bull Thre3 Style. Yep, there's a play on 'Three and Free' so you know it'll be good....
Seriously, I'm excited that I'm getting to experience this event in Los Angeles as previous years it has been an exclusively held in Canada and this is no weak-sauce night. Red Bull Thre3Style is held in 16 conuntries across the world this year to find the king of the decks. The final battle will be in Canada in December with the winner getting the seal of approval from Red Bull as part of dj royalty.
Judges include Destructo, Morse Code and Rhettmatic with an opening performance by dj Spider.  This event is open to the public, so check out the flyer for details, come see some decent competition and drink enough Red Bull to stay up for weeks...yeahhhhhhh.

Festival Season is coming......

Picture
I usually make a festival kit at the beginning of every summer, now I'm sharing with you what you need to have when you are headed to any festival this year:
-Toilet Paper. Alright, it's a given, whether you are day tripping or on a weekend camping festival those Porta Pottys are nastier than Hollywood Blvd on a Friday night.
-Bring the water. Paying $7 for a bottle is beyond dumb, unless they are adding a couple of shots with that I'm heading to the 99cents store and buying a 24 pack
-Pepto Bismal. People, this has saved my life many a time, the morning after when your stomach is growling and the hot sun is permiating the tent, you need to gulp this down so you are able to make it to the beer tent.
-Sun screen. Come on, I'm a Brit and my skin represents that.  Casper looks tanned next to me, so instead of waking up looking burnt to a toast I pack on the sun screen and go to the stage.
-Food and booze is a must to bring yourself, with festival tickets getting more and more expensive you've already paid enough to see the music, don't spend any more on overpriced watered down beer and greasy hot dogs.
-Lastly, get your shorts and band tees on and enjoy!

Bedouin Soundclash: Canadians Providing Caribbean Soul At The Roxy

Picture
PHOTO:Ryan Miceli
We paid witness to the awesome reggae power of The Lions and reggae/rock infused duo, Bedouin Soundclash, a while back and we weren't disappointed. Bedouin Soundclash packed the venue and started a perfect summer's night party and everyone was invited.

Bedouin Soundclash have become a staple at festivals all over Europe and America, and are just about to embark on the festival rounds across Canada. The Canadian duo, who are only recently a duo, after drummer Pat Pengelly left the band in early 2009; are adjusting to being on the road minus Pat. "It's interesting," bassist Eon Sinclair tells us, "certain things become automatic after playing together for so long, it's different, but I'm excited about it."
Bedouin Soundclash bring their fans an eclectic mix of reggae, dub, and a heavy dose of soul, infused with glorious rocking drums, reminiscent of The Clash. Sinclair himself finds it hard to classify their music, "I guess I've resided to the fact that music is either stuff that you like, or stuff that you don't like. Having such a mix of genres, the great thing is that it produces a big mix of audience." Having just come off a tour supporting No Doubt, they found new fans in lead singer Gwen Stefani's children, "Zuma would be brought to the side of the stage when we performed and was bobbing to the music, apparently he doesn't even do that for No Doubt."
The reggae fundamentals combined with an urban rock edge are present in all three albums Bedouin Soundclash have produced, their latest being 'Street Gospels.' On all three acclaimed albums the band recruited producer Darryl Jenifer of Bad Brains, "Darryl is a mentor and great producer," says Sinclair. Will Jenifer now be a constant when it comes to their music making process? "I don't think anything in our music is constant, and in the spirit of making diverse music, we'll see what happens with our next album," states Sinclair.
Jay Malinkski gives you rocking guitar and sexy Kingston-esque vocals; Eon Sinclair hands you the type of bass to melt away raining days and transport you to a sunset lit reggaeton party. These Canadian exports gave us a show that vibrated The Roxy's walls, had the patrons shaking what they've got and managed to wrap it all up in an image similar to that of England's 2 Tone musicians, Ordinary Boys. Jay doesn't think "there is a hanger to hang our music on," and we're ok with that. With many more hot summer lazy days ahead of us, take our advice; sip on a drink or two, and let Bedouin Soundclash provide you with the perfect soundtrack.

The Ting Tings

Picture
The British duo may have seemed like over night success to a lot of readers, and in the world of music, that may be partly true. The English rock duo, Jules De Martino and Katie White had formed groups independently before their musical paths crossed in 2007 and they formed The Ting Tings.

Originally from Manchester in the north of England, The Ting Tings have been lucky to conquer the US market with relative ease and are currently touring in Europe, wrapping up festival season. They are due back to the US in September, where they will be supporting Pink. CWG caught up with them as they fly through the US to play the new Nokia Theater, downtown.

Beginning with a long drum solo, De Martino rocked the adoring fans socks off. As the momentum built, White came bouncing on stage in a skin tight jumpsuit and thick false eyelashes. The interesting thing about The Ting Tings is that it is just the two of them. Both De Martino and White play numerous instruments and make the stage feel fuller than it actually is.

The Tings combine funk and punk without loosing their pop commercial edge. During their set they resisted playing their most well known songs too soon and pulled off a colourful, high energy performance. They provided a set that was loud and full of juicy pop goodness. Both De Martino and White, project a great rock star quality with pounding electronic pop, and a larger than life performance.
White stopped to say a heart felt thank you to the huge crowd, "L.A. was one of the first places we played in the US and you've always been an awesome audience-thank you!" As they played their one and a half hour set, the audience seemed to be as pumped as the duo on stage. The Ting Tings have a great ability to fill up a huge stage and while swapping instrument for instrument they provide an awesome indie/electro pop performance that you can't resist dancing to.

Having been nominated for Brit Awards, NME Awards and MTV Music Video awards, The Ting Tings have accomplished a lot very quickly, but do they have the substance to last? Only time will tell, however right now, with a solid fan base both sides of the Atlantic and long tours ahead of them, the British duo are going strong.

The Rescues

Picture
A packed Troubadour came a-calling our name on a recent Thursday, to invite us to sample the delights The Rescues had to offer. Seeing as the band are about to head off on a national tour, we caught up with them before they played one of their last LA shows for a while.

Individually established musicians in their own right, The Rescues have moved into the new realm of now touring as a proper band. The Troubadour was cramped and sweaty waiting for The Rescues to pick up one of the smorgasbord of instruments in stage. We were even half-hoping to see our beloved Mayor, Mr. Antonio Villaraigosa, singing along in the corner, as, "He's become somewhat of a staple at our shows," laughed Adrianne Gonzalez. Besides the political backing, the Los Angeles based quartet have been a common name in the list of bright Indie bands to watch out for. Fresh off a residency at Hotel Cafe, "The First Indie Super group" aren't nearly as pretentious as they should be. "I don't think we're cool enough to be called Indie, are we?" asked Rob Giles, who seemed to be able to play every instrument from drums to keys.

While watching The Rescues on stage, we can admit to feeling more than a little envious at the ease of the band's merry go-round with their instruments. "I'd never picked up a bass before joining the band," Adrianne explained, "so I tried it out." She's not the only one though. "Yeah, it was a grueling time," Rob laughed. Luckily for us, the concert was anything but.
It is rare at the best of times to find a group of musicians able to switch so effortlessly between instruments, but The Rescues seem to also amply throw in charisma and modesty for good measure. Combined with riotous funky rock melodies and their phenomenal ability to each possess perfected vocals, you can't help but get carried away with their music. Their four part harmonies provide a fluid entrance into their roaring bass-heavy bridges and chorus on their album title track, "Let Loose The Horses," which is soon to be released.

"The ongoing themes in our music is the comparison of lightness and dark, hope and peril, freedom and mortality. We all love big soaring, sweeping melodies" Kyler England related. Rob remarked, "our intention when writing a song is, finish a song today, without anyone getting physically injured. " We laughed before Adrianne broke it up by adding, "You think we're kidding?"
Modesty is rare with great talent but luckily Los Angeles has found that in The Rescues. Being present at The Troubadour on this night allowed the audience to reignite their faith in Indie Rock bands, as The Rescues truly throw out a life-vest to listeners drowning in pretentious over-rated music.
